Mobile Marketing Defined

Last night at the faculty dinner for The System Seminar 2008 I was asked, “So, what is mobile marketing exactly?” And this is what I said:

Mobile marketing connects businesses and their customers
individually (through their mobile devices) at the right time and place,
with the right message
and requires the customer’s explicit permission and/or active interaction.

It is so exciting to see people who aren’t in the mobile industry get excited about mobile. The people I was talking to are internet marketers who truly understand the power of a new marketing tool. It will be fun over this weekend to share how to use mobile.

If you’re here at The System, please find me. I’d love to say hi.

  1. Thank you!! While we’re on the product design & definition side rather than the advertising side of marketing, we’ve been saying “we help heads of marketing, product, and user experience optimally engage with their customers via the mobile phone”.

  2. Hey Kim,

I read this today and thought you would like it as well. Chetan Sharma, Joe Herzog, and Victor Melfi define mobile advertising as:

“any way to message a person while they are mobile through any mobile device, so as to influence their behavior. This includes space advertising such as a mobile banner in an application, promotional treatments such as an SMS ‘coupon’ or even a mobile search model.”
