Mobile Marketing. Really?

It is safe to say that while my family and friends are supportive of my new adventure into the world of mobile marketing, they certainly do not understand it.

“Mobile marketing. Does that mean you’re going to be spamming my cell phone now?”
“No, I don’t think mobile marketing is the next big thing.”
“I’m sure you know what all that means, but I sure don’t.”

And I’m fairly certain that small business owners across the US are thinking along the same line:

“Mobile marketing. Really? I just got my website up and running.”
“My customers don’t want to hear from me on their cell phone.”
“What? I need a mobile website now? Are you kidding me?”

The reality is that the rest of the world has been ahead of the U.S. in almost all aspects of cell phone use. Odd, isn’t it? We’re so used to being in front of the new trends. This time we’re not. But that is about to change.

Bango, a leader in mobile payment, has released statistics (read full article here) that show that the US just had a three-fold increase in mobile web usage in the last year. Apple just sold 700,000 iPhones in the first week of it being available. Mobile marketing is upon us. Businesses that want to take advantage of it need to get going now.

Remember when websites first came into public awareness? (You know, back when people still said, “Go to h-t-t-p, colon, forward slash, forward slash…double u, double u, double u…”) We are at that moment in time again – right NOW with mobile marketing. It is time to jump in.

This blog MobileMarketingProfits.com is all about showing small businesses and entrepreneurs how to do just that – make a profit with mobile.

Ready or not, here it comes!

  1. Boy, I’d say I’m in one of those groups too. Kind of the, “I get it, buuuuuut, I don’t really understand how it works and how I can use it for my business.” I’m so excited to have you at the helm of this great wave to lead the rest of us into port and back out into the great ethernet-sea to enjoy the ride. A glossary will be so helpful!!! Cheers! Kim “Dr. DeClutter”

  2. Great explanation of how this is taking off. Thank you! And you’re right — it’s crazy, but the U.S. is absolutely in a different place than the rest of the world.

Think about this: in 2000 when I was still living in Tel Aviv, my boss would text my mobile each week with my work schedule. The whole staff communicated primarily by SMS. 7 whole years later, in the Bay Area (about as close to tech capital of America as it gets) a lot of people still get completely thrown by a text message.

What I would like to see is (maybe this is the glossary idea?) a set of concrete examples of ways small to medium businesses could use this technology in a permission-based non-spammy manner.

Looking forward to learning more! Havi

  3. That is quite a controversial issue actually. I provide Bulk SMS Solutions for Pan India and initally, I made clients who were very interested in procurring data more than the carrier – SMS credits. As the market matured, it was realised that the only successful method of Mobile Marketing is to SMS your own clientele rather than spam, people at odd timings or for odd purposes.
